FLASH!
The
book that Kathleen Hudson began in 1986 by interviewing B.B. King, Willie Nelson
and Sam Phillips in Memphis is now available from UT Press in Austin. A
collection of 34 interviews with Texas songwriters, including interviews with
Larry McMurtry and Darrell Royal, this
book covers the Texas music scene. From
Tanya Tucker to Blaze Foley, from Guy Clark to James McMurtry, from Richard
Dobson to Stevie Ray Vaughan, the collection reveals thoughts on Texas music and
on the creative life. Interviews with Willie Nelson, Freddy Powers and Sonny
Throckmorton reveal the significance of their friendship. The list is eclectic,
not comprehensive. Johnny Winter and Townes Van Zandt, Holly Dunn and Kimmie
Rhodes, are examples of the breadth of the oral history. Hudson, who founded the
Texas Heritage Music Foundation in 1987, also teaches in the English Department
at Schreiner University and writes a weekly column on Texas music for the Kerrville
Daily Times.
